Cutting just 300 calories a day from your diet can significantly benefit your cardiovascular health, whether or not you're already at a healthy weight. A two-year study published Thursday in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology found that participants who restricted their daily intake by about 300 calories lowered their blood pressure and reduced their triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) by 24 percent. They also lowered their levels of bad LDL cholesterol. "Exercise and diet are the two most profound and easily implemented interventions we have in our environment that can reduce our cardiovascular risks," says senior study author William Kraus. "There aren't five drugs on the market when combined that could approach what we saw in this study from moderate calorie restriction."
